There are many different words to describe people’s personality in every language, in Chinese, there are two words that young people like to use to describe two totally different types of personality: 接地气(jiēdìqì) and 高冷(gāolěng).

接 地 气

jiē dìqì

接Jiē = to pick up/to connect /to come close

地dì = earth/ground

气qì = air/gas/breath

接地气(jiē dìqì) is the Chinese equivalent of down to earth, Someone who is 接地气(jiē dìqì) is someone who is easygoing, friendly and approachable, not thinking herself or himself as superior, especially when he or she is in a high position(like celebrities or senior officers). It’s also used to describe names, sayings, behaviors etc.

Examples:

  • 这个人很接地气 (zhè gè rén hěn jiē dì qì) 。
  • 他的名字很接地气 (tā de míng zì hěn jiē dì qì)。
高 冷

gāolěng

高gāo = tall or high

冷lěng = cold/coldness

高冷(gāolěng),by contrast, means cold, elegant, indifferent and unapproachable.

Gāolěng people are normally not very friendly to others and don’t like to smile or talk a lot, some are even very intimidating. But it doesn’t necessary means that they are not good people, they just don’t have much emotion or show their emotion easily. It’s difficult to be close or even talk to gāolěng people because they always keep a distance from people,or maybe they don’t want to, but people are too scared to come close to them.

Example

  • 她太高冷了。

    (tā tài gāo lěng le)

            She is so indifferent.
